Sanctification vs. Situation
One of my best friends, Benjamin Joffe, has a word of encouragement for all of you. Brace yourself, here it is:
Paul was content with his situation, or where he was in life. He was content being in jail, or being driven out of a town, or in exile because he trusted in God’s sovereignty, wisdom, and goodness! Paul was never content with his sanctification. He was always fighting his flesh, and striving in the Spirit to be more Christ-like. Americans (we) are the opposite. We are never content with our situation. We want more, we want something different, we get jealous of others, we get frustrated with trials and things that are hard. But we are content with our sanctification. We don’t want to think about it because it’s hard, so we just ignore it, or talk about how we are free in Christ and call anyone who fights for holiness legalists!
